Serenity is the home and Starship of Captain Mall-kom Reynolds and his crew:
Zoe Washburne ( First Mate) – Zoe fought alongside Mall-kom Reynolds in the Clone Wars, and was with him when he purchased Serenity. She is one of the few people he trusts in the world, along with her husband, Hoban Washburne.
Hoban Washburne ( Pilot) – Wash, as he is known by practically everyone (as he hates his first name), was hired by Mall-kom Reynolds due to rumors and stories of his skill. Though sarcastic and witty as ever and determined not to go out without the last laugh, since his marriage to Zoe he has become more cautious and committed to not dying.
Kaylee Frye ( Mechanic) – Kaylee was hired by Mall-kom Reynolds after he caught his now former Mechanic, and her going “at it” in the engine room of Serenity. At first he just wanted her off the ship, but after a dispute about the state of the engine, she proved to know more about it and fixed it herself with no spare parts. Promptly she was offered a job, and the other Mechanic was fired.
Jayne Cobb ( Muscle) – Jayne was hired by Mall-kom Reynolds when a scavenger crew that had hired Jayne caught up to them during a job. After seeing their predicament, Mall was curious who tracked them, and Jayne was the one who answered. After asking a few more questions of the burly, not-so-bright Jayne, it became clear what to do; offer him a better deal. Getting his own cabin and nearly double the pay was enough for Jayne to betray his old crew and join Serenity.
Inara Serra ( Courtesan) – Born on the planet Borleias, Inara was orphaned in her early teens during the planet’s invasion by Separatist droid forces. Once the Galactic Empire was established, she trained to become a Courtesan, with the hopes that it might one day lead her into the Imperial Diplomatic Service. Three years after her graduation, she rented an EX-0 Shuttle from Mall-kom Reynolds and serves as a sort-of diplomatic liaison for Serenity. She splits her time between Serenity and a Smuggler’s Alliance settlement of former Courtesans and other refugees on the planet Generis.
Simon Tam ( Medic) – Born and raised on the planet Mrisst along with his sister River, Simon wanted for little in life. Achieving top marks in science and biology he would later graduate from the Imperial Medical Academy with top grades. Working in the most advanced hospital in Osiris (the planet’s capital city), Simon thought he had all he could want in life, except for his sister River whom he had not seen or heard from in the years since her acceptance to the Imperial Academy for the Gifted. Later fearing the worst had happened to her, he spent his remaining credits to break her out of a restricted area of the Grand Medical Center on Coruscant, where he then managed to smuggle her to Ord Mantell. From there he tried to gain passage to Iridonia, but was exposed during his travel onboard Serenity. He has become the crew’s de-facto medic.
River Tam ( Wild Card) – Born on the planet Mrisst, River Tam excelled at anything she tried to do. Had she been born earlier than she was, the Jedi Order might have identified her as a Force-sensitive, instead of being missed during the Clone Wars. At the age of eight, River’s parents were approached by a high-ranking official from the Galactic Empire and offered River a full education at a most-prestigious academy for intelligent and gifted boys and girls throughout the Empire. She was excited, and wanted to go, if only she knew the truth. The academy was a front for experimenting on Force-sensitive children, and the near-decade River spent there has not only altered her perception and control of the Force, but has left her mentally scarred and disturbed. Rescued by her brother Simon, a skilled doctor who has begun trying to treat her injuries, River has become a part of Serenity and its crew.
Derrial Book ( Morale) – Shepherd Book as he is known to many, is an old human man, a Dai Bendu monk, who supposedly trained with the actual Dai Bendu. Thought to be extinct, the Dai Bendu species were some of the first in the Galaxy to hear the call of the Force and understand its energy, as well as develop a code of ethics around its use. Many of the original Dai Bendu teachings form the basis of learning from which sprang many Force-traditions and cultures, including both the Jedi and the Sith. Little is known about Derrial Book’s past however, except for a mysterious connection to the Galactic Empire. He joined Serenity as a passenger, and has rarely disembarked, save for when he visits the refugee camp and Smuggler’s Alliance outpost that he and the crew of Serenity have helped establish on Sernpidal.
