Your job as Medic is straightforward, though not simple; you keep the crew healthy and hale and are responsible for patching up whatever wounds they may receive while on the job. Whether your medical background comes from battle triage, hospital work, or a med academy, you are considered to be one of the best in your field. With that comes a certain measure of pride, even if your capacities on a Starship involve little else than your specific realm of expertise, as important as it may be. Whatever a Medic’s motivations is for joining a Starship crew, certified doctors in the Empire must swear by the Physician’s Code: “One must always render the best possible medical aid to all injured or inflicted citizens of the galaxy”. However, even certified doctors admit that politics have at times twisted the code, as the phrase “citizens of the galaxy” can be interpreted either figuratively or literally, however best to suit the narrative. This is not to say that all doctors must be pacifists, the code is about rendering aid to the injured; it says nothing about inflicting injury.
“You know, I’ve saved lives. Dozens. Maybe hundreds. I…I re-attatched a girl’s leg. Her whole leg! She named her gizka after me.” -Dr. Simon Tam, the Medic on Serenity
